Meet My Former Roommate - Dr. G. Boateng

'Yo Bro, you're next!'.

Those were the exact words the gentleman in this picture said to me when we met last weekend. It was his wedding and as his friend, I went to celebrate with him on his special day.

Did I say, friend? Scratch that...he is rather a brother from another mother. We were study partners all through our time as undergraduate students at UCC.

We both specialised in Human Biology in our third year and became roommates in our final year. So, we've moved past just being friends to being brothers. And he is my doctor/ primary care physician as well.

Even though we often chat on the phone, we hadn't seen in person for a long time, so I was particularly excited to see him. We were in the company of another mutual friend of ours, Kwabena Darko in whose company I attended the ceremony.

While we were having a chat, Kwabena passed a comment saying; "the best grades I ever had in UCC was during the semester I joined these guys to study. Charley, these guys can learn!"

An uncle of the groom was standing next to us when he made that comment. He said nothing but he had picked that comment in good faith.

We were later called to join the family for food. And guess what, this uncle told every family member who cared to listen that I was the one who helped George become a doctor.

Needless to say, that was how I earned for myself a full plate of wedding jollof with big chicken and a bottle of nutritious millet drink.

Of course, I was part of his academic journey but can't take credit for his hard work. I was only his study partner at some point. Truth is, George has always been exceptionally brilliant.

He made first class and graduated as the best student of the School of Biological Sciences in UCC and went on to graduate as one of the best students in UDS Medical School.

Let me not belabour the point.

I am reflecting on the good times we shared and I am happy our paths crossed in life. My G, as you take this step in life, I want to wish you the very best of the blessings that marriage brings.

Happy One Week anniversary, Dr George Nyarko-Boateng and your Mrs.
